boldly stepping away after a legendary run, Bruce Johnston bids farewell to the Beach Boys after more than six decades of music and memory. The longtime touring member—vocalist, songwriter, bassist, and keyboardist—has been with the California-born band since April 1965, initially stepping in to fill in for founder Brian Wilson during live performances. That same year, Johnston contributed his first vocals to a Beach Boys studio recording on the classic track “California Girls.” Over time, the group invited him to become a permanent member. Today, Mike Love remains the sole original Beach Boy still active in the touring lineup.
Johnston has writing credits on numerous Beach Boys songs, including 1967’s “Wild Honey,” 1971’s “Surf’s Up,” and 1966’s “Pet Sounds.” He faced a temporary dismissal in 1972 following an alleged dispute with manager Jack Rieley. Afterward, he pursued a solo path, releasing the album Going Public and experimenting with dancefloor-oriented projects, such as a disco-infused version of the Beach Boys’ “Deidre” and a cover of The Chantays’ “Pipeline.” By 1978, Brian Wilson invited him back to rejoin the band to collaborate on LA (Light Album), with Johnston serving as the album’s sole producer.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Johnston framed the moment as a fresh phase: “It’s time for Part Three of my lengthy musical career! I can write songs forever, and you’ll hear what’s coming soon. Since songwriting is where my strongest talent lies, now’s the moment to get serious again. I’m also developing a speaking-engagement chapter of my career, inspired in part by Cary Grant’s transition after his film career. With significant input from John Stamos on shaping my topics, I’ll be doing appearances and events on my own. I might even sing ‘Disney Girls’ and ‘I Write the Songs’ during these ventures.”
He added: “I’m excited to join the Beach Boys for select performances and will definitely be at The Hollywood Bowl as we celebrate our Nation’s 250th Birthday. This isn’t goodbye; it’s see you soon. I’m eternally grateful to be part of the Beach Boys’ musical legacy.”
Reflecting on the departure, Mike Love told Rolling Stone that Johnston stands among the era’s top songwriters, vocalists, and keyboardists, praising his long-standing contributions. “Change is a constant in life, and today we’re entering a new chapter,” Love said. “Bruce is shifting his focus to what he does best—songwriting and recording. I’m looking forward to future studio collaborations, and I’m thrilled that he’ll join us on special occasions, including the Hollywood Bowl performances marking our country’s milestone birthday. I love and respect Bruce Johnston.”
In the meantime, Chris Cron—the frontman of the Beach Boys tribute act Pet Sounds Live—will assume Johnston’s onstage role, having shadowed the band since late February. When not touring, Cron will continue fronting the tribute outfit.
