On December 19, 2025, 3I/ATLAS made its closest pass to Earth, coming within approximately 270 million kilometers, or 1.8 Astronomical Units (AU) – safely nestled between the orbits of Earth and Mars. Traveling at a blistering 68 kilometers per second along its hyperbolic path, the comet reached its perihelion (closest point to the Sun) on October 29 at 203.5 million kilometers from the Sun. Astronomers meticulously stacked 74 minutes of exposures using a PlaneWave Delta Rho 500 telescope and a ZWO ASI 6200M Pro camera. The resulting image showcases how solar winds sculpt the gaseous haze surrounding the comet's nucleus.
What did the initial discoveries reveal?
Discovered on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS survey in Chile, 3I/ATLAS followed in the footsteps of 'Oumuamua (2017) and Borisov (2019). Spectroscopy from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) revealed high levels of carbon monoxide, hinting at an origin in a frigid environment billions of years ago, possibly within the thick disk of the Milky Way.
Observers can track the comet's path near Regulus using apps like Stellarium until it fades as it heads toward Jupiter by March 2026.
NASA's Probe's Perspective
The Parker Solar Probe offered unique images between October 18 and November 5, capturing approximately 10 daily WISPR images following its 25th solar flyby. Positioned between 172-195 million miles away, the probe rolled to peer through the solar corona when Earth-based views were obstructed. This aided studies of the comet's brightness and composition, alongside data from STEREO, SOHO, and PUNCH.
